Junior Development Team

For the last decade we have identified local junior surfers with talent and offered a surf development programme run by the surf school that has resulted in many of juniors graduation to Scottish team members. The program has even resulted in under 18 national champions, European semi finalists and even a few national senior titles in ladies surfing and bodyboarding.

In late 2021 we have taken this programme and created a new Belhaven Surf Club that will partner with Coast to Coast Surf School instructors but the infrastructure and support for the juniors being run by enthusiastic parents from the club. We meet Friday afternoons over 24 weeks in the year and attend competitions throughout Scotland. We identify juniors that impress in lessons or competitions, that meet a certain standard of surfing and invite to join the team if we have space. There are a maximum of 24 juniors each year in the development squad.

The Generations

In our first generation we had Phoebe and Max, both have represented Scotland and Phoebe has gone on to become the national ladies champion twice and recently finished 5th in the British qualifier for the Olympics in Thurso in April 2021.

Our second generation had some great achievements both internationally and nationally. Clover Christopherson was 6th in the European Junior Bodyboard champs 2018 in Portugal and U18 Scottish surfing girls champion at 15, in 2019 at the Gathering of Clans (GOC) she was U18 winner and 2nd to Pheobe in the GOC Womens event. In 2021 she was 3rd in the ladies divison. Mikey Wimbledon made quarterfinals at U16 and U18yrs Bodyboarding and 3rd round in the Longboarding U18 at the European juniors in 2018 aged 14yrs and was Scottish Bodyboard mens champ, he was also a regular finalist at the nationals. Malcolm Todd and Callum Ainge also came 2nd and 3rd in the Junior U18 boys GOC in 2019.Malcolm and Clover are part of our instructor team.

The third generation started April 2021, with a group of 16 young local surfers that has now expanded to 20 from Dunbar, East Linton, Portobello and North Berwick. Ranging from 9yrs to 16yrs these junior surfers have been identified in 2020 lessons and free surfs and are part of the new Belhaven Junior team. In our first year, young Dunbar surfer Ansel won the junior u12 series in Thurso, we also had finalists at Pease Bay (Rudy and Tam (North Berwick) and Tam (Dunbar)) and Fraserburgh (Ansel and Ebon). Ebon finished 2nd in the U16 Boys over the series. A great starting point for the new club team going into 2022.

If you haven’t been identified by our staff but are a promising junior in the Edinburgh, Lothian or Borders area please send us a video or get in touch. Its likely there will be a junior competition circuit in 2022 starting in May locally and thats another way to get noticed.
