Local Dunbar High School juniors off to Peru for World Surf Championships

We are delighted to announce that the Scottish Surfing Federation have selected two young development surfers Joel Christopherson and Rosie Moore, both from Dunbar to represent Scotland at the up and coming World Junior Championships in Peru in December.

Joel (14yrs) commented “it’s amazing to be heading to a competition with the best juniors in the world, I am going to learn so much!” (Joel Training at Lost Shore, Scotlands world class inland wave resort with the national junior team above. Images Mal Surf)

Both young surfers are competing in under 16yrs and under 18yrs divisions. It’s a chance for these young surfers to get experience of world class competition and waves and international travel. Sam, Belhaven head coach, who will be travelling with the surfers can’t wait, as its amazing opportunity to make a network of contacts around the world and study coaching and technique to help our local and national surfers in Scotland.

Sam, senior coach at Coast to Coast Surf School commented ” this is amazing for Dunbar and junior surfing in East Lothian, that local kids now can dream big! Graduating from surf lessons at Belhaven to the world junior surf championships its pretty amazing.

Sam also said “we are aware its a big step up to world level but both these surfers are young and what they learn at this competition will set training programmes for the next 4 years and hopefully further European and World championships”. As a coach I can also bring back new understanding and contacts into the next level of development for our Scottish juniors.

This year the club have had three national champions, Erin, Ansel and Sylvie and two national series winners, Tam and Erin, and nine in national squads for shortboard and longboarding “. It’s pretty exciting and with Scottish Surfing Federation also providing consistent training for national team surfers the futures bright.
